Smile Sculpting

Not every smile needs veneers. Sometimes what reads as "off" is a chipped corner, one tooth sitting a fraction longer than its neighbor, edges that have worn flat and square with age, or a gumline that sits unevenly across the front teeth.

Smile sculpting corrects those details by reshaping what is already there — no drilling away healthy tooth to make room for something artificial. It is the most conservative cosmetic treatment we offer, and for the right case it is the only one needed.

What it involves

Smile sculpting is known clinically as enameloplasty or cosmetic odontoplasty. It is hard tissue contouring: carefully smoothing and rounding rough or uneven edges and corners so the teeth read as symmetrical and balanced.

Small changes do a great deal of work here. Rounding the corners of the front teeth softens a smile that has squared off over the years — square, flat edges are one of the quiet signals of an ageing smile, and restoring their contour tends to look markedly younger without looking done.

For the tooth contouring itself, numbing is usually not needed. We are shaping enamel, which has no nerve supply of its own.

Adding gum contouring

Teeth are only half of a smile. Where the gumline is the thing throwing off the balance — a tooth that looks short because the gum sits low, or a line that runs visibly crooked across the front — smile sculpting can be paired with soft tissue contouring, clinically a gingivectomy, to reshape the gum margin.

Done together, the two address the frame and the picture at once. Dr. Groberg will tell you at the consultation whether your case needs one, both, or neither.

Why we like it

It fits how we practice. Conservative dentistry means doing the least that achieves the result, and smile sculpting is the clearest example of that principle in cosmetic work: it removes a very small amount of surface enamel rather than preparing a tooth for a crown or a veneer.

If reshaping will not get you where you want to be, we will say so rather than sell you a treatment that falls short.
