The Effects Fiber Has on Your Enamel

Posted on 10/25/2018 by Posh Dental
Eating a diet rich in fiber has many health benefits and can improve your digestion, but you probably didn't know about the effects fiber has on your enamel. Yes, fiber is essential not only for your digestion, but because it helps protect your teeth from decay and gum disease. How Does Fiber Protect Your Teeth? While there are fiber supplements that help with your overall health, these are not enough to keep your enamel in good shape. You must eat them in the form of fruits and vegetables because the act of chewing is one of the most important things you can do for your oral health. One of the benefits of chewing foods rich in fiber, especially fruits and vegetables, is that they can act as a cleaner by removing other food particles from your teeth. Chewing food also helps to stimulate the production of saliva, which in turn protects the teeth from the sugars and acids that cause decay. Saliva is a natural antibiotic, and it allows any injury to the mouth to heal promptly and usually without the need for medication. This is the reason why animals lick their wounds to treat them. The same principle applies to humans. Producing additional saliva prevents sugars, the main reason for cavities, from sticking to your teeth. Fiber has a positive effect on your enamel because it prevents bacteria from forming in your mouth through saliva production. Having strong, healthy teeth will allow you to keep chewing on foods that are rich in fiber and you will have excellent oral health. Make sure you visit us regularly and practice good oral hygiene habits at home to prevent any problems. If you have any questions about what the effects fiber has on your enamel, please let us know, and we will be happy to address them....

The Connection Between Weight Loss and Increased Flossing

Posted on 10/15/2018 by Posh Dental
Flossing is one of the most important things you can do for good oral health which in turn can be beneficial for your overall health. Even if you brush for two minutes at least twice a day, flossing will get rid of those food particles that stubbornly get stuck in between your teeth, along the gumline. If you are part of the 10-percent of the population that doesn't floss at all, then you could also be missing out on an excellent weight-loss option. Some data concludes that only 49-percent of people floss every day, which could explain the high incidences of gum disease. Flossing helps to keep your gums healthy and reduces the possibility of developing gingivitis or periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss. According to research, between 70 and 80-percent of the population suffers from gingivitis. How Flossing Helps with Weight Loss? The connection between flossing and weight loss is an interesting one, and something not many people know about. When studying animals, researchers found that those with gum disease had a higher incidence of obesity and when the infection was treated, their weight also went down. Inflammation can have a domino effect on the body. It puts stress on the body, which, in turn, affects your metabolism. Moreover, inflamed fat cells don't control insulin effectively, and glucose from sugars is stored as fat, instead of getting used as energy. A study published in 2017 in the journal Oral Diseases, found that people who are overweight also had worse oral health than those without weight problems. Those participants with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 23 or higher also had dental problems such as severe gum disease or periodontitis. A BMI of 25 or higher was also linked to poor oral health. There is enough scientific evidence that obesity contributes to more inflammation in the body, including the mouth. Not only that, but inflammation in the body can affect the immune system. We hope that this new information motivates you to start flossing every day. It could help reduce inflammation in your body and lose weight too!...

Straighter Teeth Means Better Opportunities for Great Oral Health

Posted on 9/23/2018 by Posh Dental
It is a word that no teenager wants to hear. They do not want anyone to tell them they need to get braces because their teeth are not straight. Most people think that the idea of straightening teeth is about appearance. A great smile is one with teeth properly aligned. What teenagers and others do not realize is that straightening the teeth provides a path towards better oral health for the rest of their life. Benefits of Straight Teeth There are many benefits of straight teeth that people do not always think about. One of the reasons that dentists use braces is because of a bad bite. The bad bite is the result of crooked teeth, crowded teeth or protruding teeth. When these are present, the bite does not match up properly. This can cause a variety of problems, including damage to the teeth, the gums and the jaw. Straightening the teeth can resolve these issues before they become a much bigger problem such as lost teeth or gum disease. Straightening the teeth also helps prevent the biggest danger you face when it comes to your oral health. The reason that people run into issues with cavities, root canals and gum disease is because of poor oral hygiene habits. You may not brush enough, or you may not do it right. If your teeth are not straight and aligned, it is more difficult to clean them properly. Brushing will miss areas of the teeth where bacteria grown, and it is not always possible to floss all the teeth properly. Braces are not the most popular thing in the world. Teenagers count down the days until they can finally rid themselves of these devices. Once they do have straight teeth, they can smile from ear to ear. They can also rest a little easier knowing that it is easier to keep that healthy smile for years to come. If you want more information about how to maintain your oral health, contact the dental professionals at our offices today....
