Some data concludes that only 49-percent of people floss every day, which could explain the high incidences of gum disease. Flossing helps to keep your gums healthy and reduces the possibility of developing gingivitis or periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss. According to research, between 70 and 80-percent of the population suffers from gingivitis. How Flossing Helps with Weight Loss? The connection between flossing and weight loss is an interesting one, and something not many people know about. When studying animals, researchers found that those with gum disease had a higher incidence of obesity and when the infection was treated, their weight also went down. Inflammation can have a domino effect on the body. It puts stress on the body, which, in turn, affects your metabolism. Moreover, inflamed fat cells don't control insulin effectively, and glucose from sugars is stored as fat, instead of getting used as energy. A study published in 2017 in the journal Oral Diseases, found that people who are overweight also had worse oral health than those without weight problems. Those participants with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 23 or higher also had dental problems such as severe gum disease or periodontitis. A BMI of 25 or higher was also linked to poor oral health.
