The Effects Fiber Has on Your Enamel

Posted on 10/25/2018 by Posh Dental
The Effects Fiber Has on Your EnamelEating a diet rich in fiber has many health benefits and can improve your digestion, but you probably didn't know about the effects fiber has on your enamel. Yes, fiber is essential not only for your digestion, but because it helps protect your teeth from decay and gum disease.

How Does Fiber Protect Your Teeth?

While there are fiber supplements that help with your overall health, these are not enough to keep your enamel in good shape. You must eat them in the form of fruits and vegetables because the act of chewing is one of the most important things you can do for your oral health.

One of the benefits of chewing foods rich in fiber, especially fruits and vegetables, is that they can act as a cleaner by removing other food particles from your teeth. Chewing food also helps to stimulate the production of saliva, which in turn protects the teeth from the sugars and acids that cause decay.

Saliva is a natural antibiotic, and it allows any injury to the mouth to heal promptly and usually without the need for medication. This is the reason why animals lick their wounds to treat them. The same principle applies to humans. Producing additional saliva prevents sugars, the main reason for cavities, from sticking to your teeth.

Fiber has a positive effect on your enamel because it prevents bacteria from forming in your mouth through saliva production. Having strong, healthy teeth will allow you to keep chewing on foods that are rich in fiber and you will have excellent oral health.

Make sure you visit us regularly and practice good oral hygiene habits at home to prevent any problems. If you have any questions about what the effects fiber has on your enamel, please let us know, and we will be happy to address them.
