A lot of people begin to panic the moment they notice that part of their front tooth has chipped off or cracked. While it may make you nervous, it is a treatable condition.
Depending on the type of crack, we can either bond the tooth, cover it with a veneer, or we can place a crown over the tooth to help protect its integrity. Here are a few things to remember should you find yourself facing a cracked front tooth. What to Do if a Front Tooth CracksOne of the easiest treatments for a cracked front tooth is bonding. We spread bonding cement over the tooth and into the crack. We then smooth it out so that it matches your original tooth. Finally, we shine the tooth so that it does not look any different than it did prior to the crack. This also works if a small bit of one of your front teeth chipped off. Another treatment option is using a dental crown. Many people think you can only use crowns on the premolars and molars, but that is not true. Any tooth that is healthy enough to hold a crown, can have one. We simply cover the part of the tooth that cracked with a crown, adding strength and integrity to the tooth. If you get a cracked front tooth, it is important that you come in and see us right away. Do not use that tooth if at all possible until we can check it out. The last thing we want is the tooth to go from being cracked to being broken. That is far more painful and difficult to treat. Come in right away so we can examine the problem, then figure out the best treatment plan around.
