Gum disease is caused by the bacteria found in plaque and tartar. In response to bacteria, your body will produce substances that inflame and damage your gum tissue, ligaments, and alveolar bone. Over time, your gums will become swollen, red, and easily bleed. These are signs of gingivitis, the preliminary stage of gum disease.
As the disease progresses, your gums will begin to recede. Deep periodontal pockets begin to form between the tooth and gum, leaving more space for the infection to spread and plaque to build. If left untreated, you will develop periodontitis, a serious form of gum disease. Your ligaments and bone will begin to suffer, and ultimately, the structures that support your teeth will fail. This can lead to surgical intervention or tooth loss.
Luckily, gum disease is easily preventable. At Posh Dental, we offer preventative and restorative treatments to keep your gums healthy, and your teeth intact.
