Cleaning Dental Implants

Cleaning Dental Implants - Posh Dental Chandler AZAt Posh Dental, your oral health is our top priority. When you are missing teeth, we can provide you with dental implants to replace them. Although implants are fairly new to the tooth replacement options, they are a very popular choice, preferred by both dentists and patients alike. The titanium rods that are surgically inserted into your jaw provide a strong, stable root to support your new teeth. Unlike traditional tooth replacement options (bridges, partial dentures, full dentures), this placement enables implants to stop the bone loss that follows tooth loss. Also, unlike dentures, dental implants require much less maintenance. They still, however, need to be taken care of to prevent serious oral health care issues.

The Importance of Cleaning Dental Implants

With dental implants, your missing teeth are replaced by ceramic crowns. Even if all of your teeth have been replaced, it is still important to take care of them. Proper care is essential for the stability of your implants, and the health of your mouth. Ceramic may not suffer decay and get cavities like tooth enamel, but it can still collect plaque, tartar, bacteria, and other debris. This buildup can easily irritate your gums, which can then cause them to swell, which then leads to gum disease. If bacteria sneak under the gum line, they can attack your jawbone, including around the implants. When this happens, the bone is weakened, compromising the stability of your replacement teeth (as well as any natural teeth in your mouth). If your implants become unstable, they are likely to fail, destroying your replacement teeth.

At Home Care

Preventative care starts at home. It is important that you brush at least twice a day and floss at least once daily for the best results. This is still true even if all of your teeth have been replaced. Brushing should last at least two minutes every session, during which time you should be sure to clean all surfaces of your teeth. When you floss, you should do so carefully. Gently move the floss back and forth to get between the teeth. Be careful not to force the floss, or snap it against your gums. These actions can lead to bleeding, which can then provide easier access for oral bacteria. You should also consider using mouthwash after brushing and flossing, which will help to remove any lingering bacteria and debris from all crevices of your mouth.

Professional Care

It is also important that you receive twice yearly professional cleanings and exams. Again, even if all of your teeth have been replaced with implants, these visits are still essential to maintaining your oral health. During cleanings, all buildup, including the stubborn tartar that cannot be brushed away, is removed from the surfaces of your teeth. During your exams, your teeth and gums are checked for signs of damage and infection. Your implants are also inspected. If any signs of damage are noticed in your ceramic crowns, action can be taken to correct them. Dental exams are designed to spot issues before they become serious, helping you to maintain optimal oral health.

Taking proper care of your dental implants is essential for their success. It is also imperative for the health of your mouth. If you have any questions or concerns about the care and cleaning of your dental implants, contact Posh Dental today.
